A/B Testing for Product Managers
The Three Questions
Ask these in order. Most ideas fail at one of them, and failing one is a complete answer, you don't need to consider the others.
THE THREE QUESTIONS
What will I do if it wins?
If the answer is "ship it," good, continue.
If the answer is "ship it anyway, regardless," stop.
You don't need a test to do what you were going to do.
What will I do if it loses?
If the answer is "not ship it," good, continue.
If the answer is "ship it anyway," stop. Same reason.
Can I detect the effect I'm hoping for?
Work out the sample size (Chapter 4) before building.
If it needs 14 weeks and you have 3, stop.
A test that can't detect your expected effect will return "flat" whether or not the change worked.
Question 3 Is the One Teams Skip
Sample size gets calculated after the test is built, or after it's been running for two weeks and looks flat. By then you've spent the money. Doing the arithmetic first, it takes ten minutes, is the single highest-return habit in this whole course, because it's the one that prevents wasted build time rather than just wasted analysis.
