Lesson 4
Before You Build: Choosing Your Metrics
Help me choose metrics. THE CHANGE: [what]. THE HYPOTHESIS: [four-part]. WHAT THE
BUSINESS ACTUALLY CARES ABOUT: [the real outcome]. Recommend exactly one primary metric
and why it's the right single thing to decide on. Then tell me specifically how someone
could move that metric by making the product WORSE, be creative. Based on that, recommend
two or three guardrails. If my primary is a proxy for something longer-term, say so and
tell me what to check in historical data. And name one metric I'll be tempted to include
that I should leave out.
