Lesson 5
Before You Build: Sample Size and Duration
Help me work out how long my test needs to run. Current rate: [e.g. 3.2%]. Users per
week: [number]. Share included: [%]. Smallest lift worth detecting: [e.g. +10% relative].
Estimate sample per variant at 95% confidence and 80% power, showing your working in plain
language. Convert to whole weeks. Show how duration changes if the true effect were half
and double my estimate. Tell me plainly whether this is feasible, if over ~6 weeks, give me
my four options. Flag anything that makes these estimates unreliable. Note this is a
planning estimate, not a formal power calculation.
