Agentic AI and MCP for Product Managers
The Problem MCP Solves
The standard that changed how AI systems connect to tools and data, explained at the resolution a PM actually needs.
The Problem It Solves
Before any standard existed, connecting an AI system to a data source or a tool meant custom integration work every time. Your agent needed to reach your CRM, your ticketing system, your document store and your internal database, four separate integrations, each built differently, each maintained separately. Then you wanted the same connections available to a second AI product, and you built them again. Then a colleague's team built their own version of the same CRM connection. Multiply this across an industry and you get an enormous amount of duplicated plumbing.
MCP in One Sentence
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard for how AI applications connect to external tools and data, so that a connection built once can be used by any AI application that speaks the protocol, rather than being rebuilt for each one. It was introduced by Anthropic and is openly published.
