Claude for Product Managers
Lesson 3
Before and After: PRD Problem Statements
Before (generic):
Users want better search functionality. Currently, finding tasks is difficult and users have reported frustration. The new search feature will improve the overall user experience and reduce friction.
After (specific):
Operations managers at growing companies (50–200 employees) lose an average of 20+ minutes per day manually scrolling to locate tasks assigned more than 2 weeks ago.
The core pain: there is no way to search by task name, assignee, or template users must remember which project a task lives in and navigate there manually. This creates a secondary problem: recurring task templates get recreated from scratch because users can't find existing ones. The search feature addresses both of these use cases as a single solution.
The difference: the second version is designable. An engineer who reads it knows exactly what to build and why.
